Corinne Bailey Rae recently sat down with Ann Powers from the LA Times to discuss her latest project 'The Sea' as well as the context and evolution of it considering the recent loss of her husband and her current stance in music.

She talks about how she needed to maintain a sense of honesty and freedom in the project given that art doesn't function without it.  Although Bailey Rae takes inspiration in R&B and soul genres she didn't want to create another retro soul album - something that sounded like it made in the 60's but made in modern times.

She reflects on how the song making process for 'The Sea' was already 6 or 7 songs through when her husband died and that it was eerie or spiritual that for some reason she had been on such a thoughtful and emotion pulling wave before her world around her crumbled.

Lastly, she talks about the freedom of the writing process on this album, - being able to be inspired at home while doing day to day tasks or simply letting creative flow build until it was ready to express itself.

'The Sea' came out in January of 2010 and has been well received - its a rather raw take at emotions and art compared to her last offering yet somewhere there is more growth, emotion and reaching that certainly suggest Miss Bailey Rae will continue to impress us in her musical quests.
