The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards are fast approaching, which means that soon you'll be treated to an excellent night of performances and appearances by the likes of Eminem, Linkin Park, Usher, Paramore, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence and the Machine, B.o.B and Deadmau5 (who will serve as the house DJ at the show). While people tend to remember the classic performances and the unhinged moments, the coveted Moonman is the reason why people show up and tune in. This year, there are 16 categories wherein some of the biggest music stars in the universe will compete for the coolest trophy in awards shows. Today, we take a look at one of the nominees in the Video of the Year category.

Over the next few days (leading up to the actual VMA show this Sunday), we'll take a look at each one of the Video of the Year nominees individually, and we begin with B.o.B's "Airplanes." B.o.B has come an awfully long way in a year, as he has moved from a mixtape maestro to a genre-hopping radio staple who could elevate himself to international superstar at any moment. A lot of that has to do with "Nothin' on You" (which is nominated for Best Pop Video) and even more has to do with his crossover smash "Airplanes," which teamed him with Paramore singer Hayley Williams (and Eminem, in the remix) for a powerful track about needing a wish when you're down and out.

The video matches the ethereal quality of the lyrics, as the images don't so much flash as they do drift and haunt. Despite the fact that the song was such a huge hit, B.o.B and Williams still haven't met, which should make their first handshake at the VMAs extra special.

But does "Airplanes" have enough to top the rest of the Video of the Year nominees to capture the Moonman? It appeals to a giant cross-section of fans, which helps its cause. Plus, it's visually interesting and features two artists who will probably be appearing on VMA broadcasts for years to come. Will B.o.B walk away a victor? You'll have to watch to find out.

MTV European will not air the show live but will play back the action in its entirety every day of next week. Have a look at the schedule below to book your couch time for the best Award show on the planet.
