Genard Parker is seeking $2.3 million (ÂŁ1.2 million) for helping start the singer's career.

Ashanti was ordered to pay $630,000 (ÂŁ335,000) to Parker by a jury in New York last year for breaking contract with the producer.

However, the BBC reports that Ashanti's lawyer said that she should not have to pay more than $50,000 (ÂŁ26,593) to the producer.

Parker claimed that the singer signed a contract stating she would give a percentage of sales from her first three records to him. However, Ashanti argues that the contract was voided after her first record company rejected her.
