Derülo was born September 21, 1989 and is a native of Miami, Florida. Derülo has been performing since the age of five and wrote his first song titled "Crush On You" at the age of eight. Derülo spent his youth studying opera, theater, and ballet. He attended Dillard High School for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and is a graduate of the New York American Musical and Dramatic Academy.
At the age of 12, Derülo met his manager and has since been writing and performing intent on becoming a solo performer. After attending performing arts schools and honing his talents as a singer and dancer, Derülo won the grand prize on the 2006 season finale of the TV show "Showtime at the Apollo." Derülo was discovered by music producer J.R. Rotem, who signed him to his record label Beluga Heights and Warner Bros. Records.
Derulo kept writing, and at age 17, Jason wrote and sang the chorus to "Bossy", a song on southern rapper Baby's album Five*Stunna (Cash Money/Universal). This credit opened the floodgates, as Derulo became a sought-after tunesmith on songs by hip hop star Lil Wayne, Bad Boy R&B singer Cassie and girl group Danity Kane. Jason also lent his pen for the smash single "Replay" by Iyaz.
Derulo scored a surprise late-summer 2009 jam as a singer when he wrapped an Imogen Heap sample (a hook made popular in the Saturday Night Live sketch "Dear Sister") around a sleek modern soul beat. "Whatcha Say" soared into the Billboard pop Top Ten in anticipation of his debut with having sold over 2 million copes according to Nielsen SoundScan. ?Whatcha Say" has now flown abroad enjoying magic chart success in the UK and European charts as it continues to climb.
Derulo's dance track "Strobelight" is featured in the forthcoming MTV movie Turn The Beat Around, with Jason performing the song in a heart-thumping sequence. Derülo is currently working on his debut album, which is set for release in early 2010. He was announced as an opening act for Lady Gaga for her 2009-2010 tour, The Monster Ball Tour.
